Los Chivos, or simply "the goats", is an organized effort taken up by concerned Texas meat goat producers to save an old friend. The concern is centered around the near extinction level events of the 1990s that almost drove our beautiful Heritage Texas Range Goats into the history books.

The incredible journey of "The Original Texas Meat Goat" to what is now Texas began almost 500 years ago when 16th century Spanish conquistador, explorer, and greedy gold bug Francisco Vázquez de Coronado set out on what must be the wildest of all wild goose chases in Texas history - the search for the fabled "Seven Cities of Gold". Cornado mortgaged everything that he and his wealthy wife owned for his 1540-1542 expedition, and lost it all. He never found a single ounce of gold.

Coronado lost a lot of everything after chasing around what is now the southwestern US for the lost cities of gold, but the 2 most valuable things that he lost in Texas were: the horse, and the goat.

The horse and the goat came to Texas together. They are still kindred spirits and were part of our culture long before there was a culture here. They were both here before the Comanche, the Mexican, the American, the Texan, the white man, the black man, the brown man, the cowboy, the vaquero, the Longhorn, the Corriente, etc., etc..

While not technically indigenous because humans brought them here, after almost 500 years and just as many generations of running feral, these Texas originals are now considered native to the state. These goats are the direct result of Mother Nature and her hungry Texas predators running the cut gate for hundreds of generations. Our majestic Heritage Texas Range Goats acclimated, adapted, and evolved with limited human interference throughout the Texas Hill Country, Concho Valley, and Edwards Plateau for centuries. They deserve their own place in Texas history.

Our mission is to help them do just that.

Do you offer delivery?
What's the difference between a Cabrito and a Castrado?

We offer both Registered and Grade purebred Spanish goats. All of our registered Spanish goats are DNA verified, microchipped, and recorded with The Spanish Goat Registry. If you are not already a member of The Spanish Goat Registry and buy a Registered goat from us, we will pay for your 1st year's membership as a gift.

Are your goats registered?

The best way to get 1st access to the spring kid goats that we sell in the fall is to register yourself on the "First Call List" by entering your email. Everyone that registers will be offered the first right of refusal and is able to buy before the public.

How does your waiting list work?

A Cabrito (weanling) is a young intact male goat that is harvested before puberty begins. They are usually about 3 months old and weigh about 30-35 pounds. We do not sell Cabritos because our market pays a premium for Castrados.

A Castrado (fat wether) is a young male goat that is castrated before puberty begins and then allowed to grow much larger. They are usually about 6-8 months old and will weigh about 100 pounds.

All of our Castrados (fat wethers) are grain finished and 100% all-natural.
